What we are to worry about (Psalm 82).

“Vindicate the weak and fatherless; Do justice to the afflicted and destitute.  Rescue the weak and needy; Deliver them out of the hand of the wicked.”  Psalms 82:3-4

In this passage, God tells us what we are supposed to be doing here on earth.

We are supposed to be reflecting God’s light and shining in the darkness of this world.  We are supposed to be bringing savor, preserving life, and purifying ourselves by being the salt of the earth.

There are three Hebrew words in this Psalm that teach us three different things that God wants us to spend out time doing – Three things to be concerned about – three things that we are to worry about:

     1.  Shaw-fat’ – defend – the poor and the fatherless (Psalm 82:3)
     2.  Tsaw-dak’ – do justice (make right) – to the afflicted and needy (Psalm 82:3b)
     3.  Paw-lat’ – deliver – make a way for the weak and the destitute (Psalm 82:4)

What are we supposed to be worrying about?  Defending doing justice and delivering.

How does our enemy keep us from concentrating on these three important tasks in life?  By getting us to worry about some other things – some things that we are actually not supposed to be worrying about!

In Matthew chapter six, our Lord tells us specifically not to worry about our physical life and our body (what we will eat or drink and what we will wear.).  Jesus also teaches us not to worry about tomorrow.

Instead, we are to “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added unto us.  (Matthew 6:33)

What are “all these things?”

“All these things: are the things we tend to worry about!  Things we need to be reminded not to worry about include our physical life(what you don’t have to eat and drink), our body (what you don’t have to wear) and tomorrow (things you cannot control).

When we stop worrying about these physical things, we can spend more time and energy being concerned about God’s plan for us:  to defend the poor and the fatherless, to do justice for all and to deliver the destitute.
